Paying it forward

Paying it forward…..

Retired Signaller, John Hopkins who served from 1971 to 1985, has embarked on a deeply personal mission to give back to those who supported him after he faced significant health challenges.

After leaving the service, life threw some unexpected hurdles John’s way. A back injury developed into Degenerative Disc Disorder and left him reliant on crutches for years. Around 10 years ago, his condition worsened to the point where he became an occasional wheelchair user.

Just before the Covid-19 pandemic, resilient and undeterred, John relocated to Norfolk, seeking a new chapter in his life.  Unfortunately, about a year ago, he found himself in a frustrating position, in that his wheelchair had needed significant repairs. The NHS in Norfolk were unable to assist him due to the wheelchair not being issued through them.  This left John feeling isolated and unsupported.

To add further difficulties, John was losing the use of his left hand, making his wheelchair even more of a challenge.  The Occupational Health team suggested that a mobility scooter may now be more suited to John’s needs.  Thankfully the Occupational Therapist was aware of military support and introduced John to a SSAFA Caseworker who was able to reach out to the Royal Signals Charity along with the Royal British Legion who together were able to help fund a new Scooter for John.

John said “With the scooter, I can now navigate the village and even travel to nearby Hunstanton and back!”

Grateful for the support he received, John has decided to undertake a fundraising challenge to give back to those who helped him – and to support other Signallers.

In June, John will take on a daily challenge to walk with crutches from his home to North Beach, Heacham, and back. While this might seem like a modest distance of about a mile, it will involve one small incline as he crosses a flood barrier, and each day’s journey will be marked by determination and perseverance. John plans to walk for 30 days straight, taking breaks as needed, in order to raise vital funds that will benefit his Corps Family.

To encourage John in this courageous effort, donations are welcome via his fundraising page: www.justgiving.com/page/john-hopkins-royal-signals

John hopes that his fundraising journey will help to encourage others to take on their own journey.
