Exercise HAWK NORDIC: 214 Signal Squadron Takes on Sweden

From 20–27 April 2025, eight soldiers from 214 Signal Squadron swapped their usual kit for skis during Exercise HAWK NORDIC; a challenging week of Nordic skiing in the snow-covered wilderness of Sweden. The exercise, run by Op BASE CAMP as part of the Infantry Nordic Ski Camp, was supported by the Royal Signals Charity and Regimental PRI, helping reduce costs and make the experience more accessible for all ranks.

The aim of the week was to achieve the Nordic Foundation 1 (NF1) qualification, which covers essential skills for ski touring in cold environments. This includes ski techniques, navigation, hazard awareness, emergency procedures, and the ability to operate safely as part of a group in Nordic terrain.

For most of the team, this was their first-ever time on skis. The learning curve was steep, with plenty of falls and frustrating moments, but through persistence, grit, and constant support from each other, every soldier made significant progress. The team’s determination paid off with all participants successfully achieving their NF1 qualification.

A standout moment came when the team received coaching from Olympic-level biathletes on a live Biathlon range; an incredible opportunity not typically offered on the NF1 course. Daily mini-competitions and team challenges added a fun, competitive edge that helped reinforce learning and boost morale.

Lt Churton Fairman said “We’re extremely grateful to the Royal Signals Charity for helping make this adventure possible,”  another participant had this to say “without their support, it would have been out of reach for many of us. We’ve come back stronger, more skilled, and more united as a team.”

Exercise HAWK NORDIC pushed individuals outside of their comfort zones, taught new physical and mental skills, and reinforced the value of teamwork under pressure. It’s a week the team won’t forget.
