18 Signallers Complete the Yorkshire Marathon and Raise £2,759: Thank You!

The Charity

On Sunday 18 October, 18 service personnel from 11 (RSS) Signal Regiment lined up at the Altra Yorkshire Marathon. Many of them were running a marathon for the very first time. After fifteen weeks of early mornings, long runs and sore legs, every single one of them crossed the finish line. We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who got them there.

Their goal was to raise £2,400 for the Royal Signals Charity. They flew straight past it and thanks to 102 donations, they raised a fantastic £2,759. Every pound, whether it was a £5 note from a colleague or a generous gift from a family, it all made a difference, and we’re grateful to each of you.

Leading the way home was Sig Humpleby, who finished in a brilliant 3:08:00. He was followed closely by Sig Evans in 3:10:21 and LCpl Scott in 3:26:59. Every member of the team showed real grit, and we couldn’t be prouder of them all.

The team also want to thank the families, friends and colleagues who sent messages, cheered from the side of the road and put up with their endless talk of mileage. Your support got them round the course, especially when the miles got tough.

The Royal Signals Charity would like to personally thank Sig Humpleby, Sig Evans, LCpl Scott, Sig Oliver, Capt Gray, Sig Wideman, Sig Ghafry, Sig McLeod, Sig Robson, Sig Cunningham, Sig Silk, Sig Bridge, Sig Williams, Sig Harrington, Sig Twynham, Cpl Larkin, Sig Gurung and Sig O’Conner for all their efforts and dedication.

If their marathon has got you thinking about doing something yourself, you don’t need to run 26.2 miles to make a difference. Here are a few easy ways to get involved:

Set up your own JustGiving page. It takes a few minutes, and sharing it with friends, family and workmates is often all it takes to get donations rolling in.

Pick a challenge that suits you. A parkrun, a sponsored walk, a charity bike ride, a month without takeaways or a team quiz night can all raise money. Choose something you’ll enjoy and the rest follows.

Get your workplace or club involved. Bake sales, dress-down days, raffles and coffee mornings are simple, sociable ways to raise money together.
