The Branch was formed in 1935. One of the driving forces behind the formation was Lt Col ME Holdsworth, then the Commanding Officer of 48th (South Midlands) Divisional Signals (1933-1937). The Branch donated a bench in his honour at the National Memorial Arboretum in 2002.
Regular meetings and fund raising events helped the welfare of Ex Volunteers and was a powerful factor in enabling the 48th to quickly raise a second regiment (which became the 61st Divisional Signals) for WW2. The Branch has continued its association with the 48th ever since. On the reorganisation of the Territorial Army, 35th (South Midlands) Signal Regiment (V) was formed and incorporated the 48th as 48th Signal Squadron. The Squadron rerolled and came under command of 37th Signal Regiment on the disbandment of 35th Signal Regiment in 2010.
For many years the Branch met at Cateswell House, Hall Green before moving to a TAC on Stoney Lane. When a new TAC was built in Sutton Coldfield to house RHQ 35th (South Midlands) Signal Regiment the name Cateswell House was again adopted and the Branch moved to the Regimental Sergeants Mess. Alas this site was sold and the RHQ moved to Canley in Coventry area. Permission was given for the Branch to relocate to the current site, the home of 48th (City of Birmingham) Signal Squadron, (the name being granted on the 21st anniversary of the award of the Freedom of Birmingham).
